Principal's Message
Dear members of the OLHC school community,
God of creation,
Bless the artists, who by their gifts make the world more joyful and beautiful.
Through their creativity, they teach us to see more clearly the truth around us.
They inspire in us the gift of wonder and awe.
Through their hope and vision, they remind us that life is full of surprise and joy.
Bless all who create in your image.
God of creation.
Let us all be artists so that our hearts may sing and our lives be fulfilling.
Amen
Foundation Art Show

This week showcased lots of examples of OLHC providing opportunities and experiences that help us walk the talk of developing the whole child. Schools often band this term around on their websites and promotional flyers to showcase their ability to provide a broad range of experiences for their students. This week we saw what this looks like in the flesh.
Experiences outside the mainstream classroom this week included a wonderful art show in the Foundation classrooms, a competitive volleyball tournament for our senior students, our grade 5’s support for the revegetation of the Flume area of Warrnambool with some tree planting on Tuesday, a soup luncheon and Maths games for our grade 6 students and families, a school assembly from Grade 5CW, a Father’s Day stall and a huge community breakfast to celebrate Father’s Day on Friday morning. (Thanks to Desiree Ryan for coordinating this event)
I wish to thank the staff and parents who have worked tirelessly to ensure these experiences are a success. Lastly, I hope you have had a chance to see the improvements we are slowly making to the school's appearance. Our new white picket fence at the loop entrance is taking shape and creating a great first impression.
Have a great weekend.
Steve

A Message from Mr A
Week 8 Term 3
FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST
A great turnout this morning for the Father’s Day breakfast. The BBQs were running overtime and we were lucky to have so many OLHC staff and parents to keep up with the demand for egg and bacon rolls. A big thanks to Ms O’Keeffe for jumping in to cover Fun Loop Friday this morning with plenty of dad jokes flowing through the loop.

TEACHER AIDE APPRECIATION WEEK
This week is Teacher Aide Appreciation Week and we take the time to recognise the support staff we have around the school. As a teacher, I saw what these dedicated people do at the classroom level, however, since taking on the AP role I have a greater understanding of the impact they have in all areas of the school. They play a vital role in not only supporting education but also assist students in wellbeing, occupational therapy exercises, social development, fine motor skills, extracurricular sport and art events and have created a great program in Hands on Learning for our school. We are lucky to have them!
FOUNDATION ART SHOW
Wow! What a success! A great turnout on Monday for parents and special people to come through and check out the amazing art pieces created by our Foundation students. The theme tied in with their Inquiry unit, Fur, Feathers and Fins. Well done to all involved.
LOVED AND SHARED- GRADE 4
I accompanied a group of Grade 4 students out to Loved and Shared this afternoon with Mr Jongebloed as they volunteered their time to sort through donated belongings. This is a perfect example of students showing action as part of their Inquiry unit, The Blue Marble. Each of the classes will have an opportunity to spend some time doing this over the next few weeks. Well done Grade 4 team and check out some of the photos.

TREE PLANTING- GRADE 5
Our Grade 5 cohort were busy on Tuesday planting trees around our foreshore. Well done team! Here is a little blurb from Ms Watson-
“On Tuesday Grade Five students eagerly gathered together with shovels in hand and smiles on their faces, ready to embark on an adventure of tree planting. 5GR were involved in planting one hundred and fifty saplings at the Lake Pertobe playground area. 5CW and 5SH later in the day headed to the Flume carpark and planted over three hundred saplings, all as a part of helping the Warrnambool City Council to provide aesthetic, environmental and ecological benefits to the community.
Armed with the knowledge of the environment and the importance of sustainable practices, these young eco-warriors were determined to make a positive impact. With guidance from their teachers, parent helpers and local environmental experts, they carefully selected native saplings that would thrive in the local ecosystem. This linked perfectly to our religion focus ‘Care For Our Common Home’. The students joined in the mission of nurturing and protecting the natural world.” Ms Watson
SOUP LUNCH- GRADE 6
On Thursday the parents of our Grade 6 students came in for a soup lunch. The parents were also introduced to the maths games being played in the classrooms, with students prompted to explain the strategies used. The games involved place value, area, multiplication and division. A great example of parent engagement. Well done to the Grade 6 team!
Enjoy Sunday with your special people.
Thanks,
Naish

"Loved & Shared"
We have had an overwhelming response from our OLHC community who have donated 95kg of goods to Loved & Shared in 3 days. They are extremely appreciative of the donations received thus far and look forward to seeing the donations continue to come in over the next few weeks! There is currently a high demand for warm clothing, socks, car and booster seats, so if you are able to assist with these items please bring them along to school! Duped by God
(Matthew 16: 21 - 27)
Peter must have felt duped by God when Jesus rebuked him. What did he say that was so bad? When Jesus foretold of his future suffering and death, Peter took what he considered an appropriate defensive stand. Not you, Lord! Never!
Only moments earlier, he had called Jesus the Messiah. Peter’s understanding of that term meant conquering hero, not suffering servant of God’s will. Peter liked to imagine victory achieved without a scratch. Victory gained at the cost of ultimate sacrifice was no victory in his mind. If Peter was duped, it was how own preconceptions about God and religion that betrayed him. Gaining the world at the price of the soul was no bargain. But losing everything for the sake of God’s victory is the one purchase we all want to consider.
For what are you willing to suffer (love, money, justice, peace, the truth)? How much are you willing to suffer for these things?

We Deserve Better, Don’t We
Then Jesus went to town on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?” (Matthew 16: 24 - 26)
Who among us hasn’t thought: “I’ve worked so hard, been honest and true, I deserve rest and reward”. That only seems fair and reasonable. Good people deserve good lives – it’s the presupposition of most cultures – and the essence of the Australian dream.
Like Peter, we find it hard to believe that decent people could end in ignominious failure. Who wants to see themselves or their heroes ridiculed and reviled? Peter’s “say it ain’t so, Lord,” is a very human response to such disheartening news.
But Jesus says not only is it so but to think otherwise is the work of the devil. The minute we begin to believe that we are entitled to a life free from sacrifice, we are not thinking as God does – for our God continually offers God’s-self in sacrifice to us. Throughout his years in ministry, Jesus reminds us that true joy and rest come with discipleship – with following God’s way of compassion and justice.
So perhaps it’s time to take stock of your expectations. If you are hoping for your just rewards, you will be sorely disappointed, no matter how much money you make or fame you achieve. If, on the other hand, you are preparing for the many difficult days ahead by strengthening your love and commitment to others and to God, then you have already tapped into your heavenly treasure.

Best of the Web: How to be a supportive adult in a child’s life, and more
Tips on how to be a child's favourite adult. What is the International Baccalaureate? And are you an 'orchid' or 'dandelion' parent?

5 tips to become a kid's favourite adult
(Mayowa Aina, Life Kit – NPR)
When it comes to parenting, there’s a plethora of books, articles, podcasts and online groups that parents can turn to for support around raising children. Yet if you are an adult in a child’s life, and not a parent, there’s not quite as much.
Author and entrepreneur Rachel Cargle explains that while she’s not a parent, she’s an ‘auntie figure both for my nieces and nephews who are biologically part of my life, but also as my friends and other people in my community are having children of their own’.
The writer shares five tips on how adults can be supportive and positively impact a child’s development even when they aren’t the parent. Licensed child and adolescent psychologist Erlanger Turner suggests providing non-judgemental support.
‘Kids might be afraid to share certain things with their parents because they’re afraid they’ll get in trouble or disappoint them’, says Turner.
The article also shows how the benefit of an adult and child relationship works both ways. Cargle says, ‘I don’t want to live a life where children aren’t at all a part of it because they do bring such a beautiful wonder and really just some of the fun that we often miss out on as we move through adulthood’.
