Principal's Message
Dear members of the OLHC school community,
As term 2 draws to an end I wish to thank the staff and students for such a productive and positive term. We have managed to fit a lot into these 9 weeks including a range of community activities, sporting experiences, classroom based sessions and camps and excursions. I wish to sincerely thank the parents for their support of our wonderful school and the PFA for driving many of these activities.
A highlight for many younger children was the new Junior playground.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable winter vacation
Steve

A Message from Mr A
If you ever wanted a window into how amazing our school is, then this was the week to be here. There were so many incredible learning experiences across the whole school that make our community such a great place to be involved in.
PRIMARY PERFORMERS- Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
We have 9 students who are currently part of the Primary Performers show, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ms Louden and Callum (big brother of Emily who was performing) took a friend of each of the students to yesterday’s performance. The 9 students performing were Harriet Jess- Year 1, Lily Barraclough- Year 2, Patrick Bonnett- Year 2, Michaleen O’Brien- Year 3, Audrey Sheldon- Year 3, Hayley Bonnett- Year 4, Ella Moloney-Year 4, Emily Hancock-Year 6 and Lily Hogan- Year 6. A big congratulations to them as they work through each of the performances over Thursday, Friday and Saturday and thanks to Ms Louden and Callum for supporting them. Check out the photos of some of the performers below-
MILO’S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY- FOUNDATION
Our Foundation level had a Tuesday that they won’t forget in a hurry. Milo’s Birthday Surprise Party was the culmination of our students learning their basic sounds in the Little Learners phonics program that we implemented this year. The students got to dress up as an animal that begins with the first letter of their name and their costumes didn’t disappoint. The birthday spread they were presented with, prepared by our Foundation staff, was a fantastic example of the effort and dedication our teachers and support staff have here at OLHC. Milo definitely got the biggest surprise when he walked into the party and from all reports he had a great time.
MAPPING MY WORLD- GRADE 1
Our Grade 1 level headed off to Tower Hill on Wednesday as a wrap up to their Inquiry unit, Mapping My World. The students discussed the geographical features of the landscape and how maps can be used to help with direction. We all went for a walk, spotting some wildlife along the way and the students participated in some learning activities when they returned to school. Well done to the Grade 1 level on a successful Inquiry unit.
SHARED LUNCH/PARENT ENGAGEMENT- GRADE 4
Our Grade 4 level welcomed their parents in for a shared lunch experience on Tuesday where students got to share some of their learning that they are proud of. There was a big turnout in the Eugene Dalton Hall and these shared lunches are proving to be quite popular and are a perfect way to improve parent engagement and create positive community connections.
WORLD OF ART- GRADE 5
Our Grade 5 level showcased the work they have been completing in their Inquiry unit, World of Art, on Wednesday and Thursday with an art exhibition in the Eugene Dalton Hall. This was an excellent opportunity for parents, students and the wider community to view the incredible work the students have created over the course of the term. The parents were welcomed in for a shared lunch experience on Wednesday. Amazing effort Grade 5 team and all those involved.
AFLW- CARLTON CLINIC
We welcomed Matty Buck, the coach of AFLW Carlton, and some Carlton players on Thursday as they ran some clinics with our senior students. Women’s footy is on the increase and this was a great example of lifting it’s profile to encourage participation. From what I saw on Thursday, we have some bonafide stars in the making.
FUN LOOP FRIDAY-
A big thanks to Ms O’Keeffe for running the final Fun Loop Friday of the term. This is proving to be a great way to lift students’ energy and positivity as they make their way into the final day of each week.
SHOUT OUT
A shout out to recognise all the efforts our support staff go to in order to make the above events possible. The teachers are typically the face of these events but there is a dedicated group of our staff who work tirelessly in the background to ensure these events run smoothly. A big thank you from Steve and myself. We are lucky to have them.
Such an amazing week to finish the semester off. Enjoy the break with your families.
Thanks,
Naish

This week we will focus on brushing up on our understanding of Roblox, a game that approximately 68% of students in Grade 3 - 6 play.. Roblox is an online gaming platform where you can play games designed by other users and create and share your own games. If your child plays this game or their friends do, we would recommend you know the basics of how the game works too. Roblox games can contain mature content and expose children to online predators and bullies. The parental controls are essential for safer playing but are not failsafe.

AFLW Carlton Visit from Abbie McKay, Keeley Sherar and Brooke Vickers
Yesterday the Grade 6 girls had three AFLW Carlton players visit for a clinic and a chat.
The players were Abbie McKay 5, Brooke Vickers 24, and Keeley Sherar 25. The Woman’s coach Matt Buck was also here to put the girls through a few drills and goal-kicking.
We then went inside for a chat.
Thank you to the Carlton Female Football club.
AFLW Carlton Day
By Lexi Pickford And Layla Sherlock
All grade 6 girls participated on Thursday the 22 of June when the 3 AFLW carlton players came to teach and answer questions. The 3 players that came are Abbey McKay number 5, Brooke Vickers number 24, Keeley Sherar number 25 and the coach Mathew Buck. They taught us how to play football, how to kick and hand ball. It was a really successful day. Everyone enjoyed the day and we were really grateful for them to take their time out of their day to drive down from Melbourne to share their story and talent!

8 tips for surviving the school holidays!
With school holidays upon us here’s a few ideas to help for smoother days!
1. PLAN AHEAD– this is probably stating the obvious and is always easier said than done, but a couple of weeks can get filled up fast! So, book in those play dates, babysitting arrangements and community activities. An ‘extra special day’ planned for the end of the school holidays can work well too. But don’t forget to schedule in some lazy all-day-in-the-PJ’s days and know that as it goes with children – it won’t always go to plan – and that’s ok!
2. TAG TEAM IT – Gather your village – school friends, extended family or perhaps neighbours. If you have to work, or just need some time out for self-care, do you have a trusted person who can look after your children for a day? You can then babysit for them or perhaps cook them a favourite meal or two.
3. COMMUNITY CONNECTION – Most communities have an abundance of offerings in the school holidays. The local library is always a great place to start and is usually free. Sports clinics, art workshops, school holiday programs, YMCA, Aquatic centre, and the Museum are also great fun! If your child is nervous about not knowing anyone or trying something new, see if they have a friend that might want to attend with them. A good tip is to try and space out spending – i.e. try not to have all the expensive things first up.
4. SET INTENTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS – Talk to your children about how it might be in the holidays and what you might expect from them. This could be especially important if you need to continue to work. For example, you can watch a movie of your choice at 2pm. Or you can use technology from 3-4pm.
5. SCHEDULE IN YOUR OWN SELF-CARE – Although it’s beneficial to practice mindfulness and being in the moment as much as you can during the holidays with your kids, it is really important to make sure that your tank is full – to help you be the best parent you can be. Make sure you have time out for a gym session, see a movie with a friend, read a magazine at a café or even just have a long bath with a glass of wine and a good book!
6. LOWER SOME EXPECTATIONS – School holidays can be a tricky time and although you might be busy with activities, it can be a helpful to relax on the routine a little! The kids might always be hungry (tip – a fruit and vegetable platter topped up in the fridge can help) and it might feel like the house is always a mess. It’s ok to be like Elsa and ‘LET IT GO!’ Let them get creative and turn the lounge room in to a cubby house! Less stress is better for everyone.
7. BORED CAN BE GOOD – Experts suggest that it’s not ideal for kids to be constantly entertained. Sure, some monitored screen time and structured activities are great, but so is being bored occasionally – it incites imagination! We love these 150 tips from the Dorky Mum’s blog for ideas https://ruthdawkins.net/2017/12/14/boredom-box-ideas-for-work-at-home-parents/
8. CREATE YOUR KIDS OWN ‘WORK STATION – If you have to work from home during the holidays, set up your own work station in a nice and light area, maybe the kitchen, and make one up for your kids too! You could give them their own assignment or set it up with craft items such as paper, textas and paint. It can work best if you work in shorter bouts. For example, work for 40 minutes and break and play and then start again. Other places to get some work done (albeit noisy) is to take your laptop to an Indoor Play Centre where you can still supervise your children.
