Principal's Message
Dear members of the OLHC school community,
This week the children finally got onto the new junior playground. It was certainly exciting for all of them and we remain eternally grateful that our community worked together to make this possible.
There wouldn't be many days when I don't have children dropping in to see me for a whole range of reasons. The vast majority of these “drop-ins" are positive and fun experiences, especially for me. This week I had 4 girls from 2SS march in with letters to showcase their skill in writing a persuasive piece of writing. The range of topics they covered included:
- Children should be able to select who is in their class each year- Ava
- The school week should be three days only - Lottie
- Mrs Smits’ class should have a pet turtle - Grace
- The morning song should be the Richmond Theme song - Ruby (See photo below)
Have a relaxing weekend!

A Message from Mr A
FUN LOOP FRIDAY- CREATIVITY AND REASONING
A beautiful wintery morning greeted us on Fun Loop Friday this morning. The question today was whether they could have the ability to fly or breathe underwater. Very early on there were plenty of students who chose to fly, however, towards the end there were a few students who chose to breathe underwater. The underlying concept today was for the students to explain their thinking, answering the why to their answer. When we prompt our students to reason and explain their logic, this promotes higher order thinking. Some of the ‘whys’ today-
Fly-
- So I can get to places quickly
- Cheap travel
- Get home quickly
- Get to the top of Mt Everest quickly
- Better to soar with the eagles than swim with the fish (parent response)
Breathe underwater-
- So I can be a mermaid
- Search for treasure
- Swim with all the marine life
- Surf big waves and not drown
- Chase sharks all day
GRADE 2 INQUIRY- WORLD OF WORK
Our Grade 2 cohort have been active this term with their Inquiry unit, World of Work. Parents visiting explaining their occupations and excursions to different workplaces. This week they were off to Coast FM to see the inner workings of a radio station. The students had a brilliant time learning about this and recording their voices. Well done to the Grade 2 teachers for organising this for our lucky students. Check out some photos below.

REPORTS/PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Your child’s report will be released this coming Friday. We have scheduled parent teacher conferences for Week 3 of Term 3. This may vary for a couple of classes who have teacher movement at this time. These classes will be contacted directly for when their scheduled times will be. Parents are able to choose whether to have a face to face conference or request a phone call. This will be done through PAM and we will be in contact as to when to book next term.
Have a relaxing weekend with your family.
Thanks,
Naish

Term 2 - School Mission Day
Our year six group would like to help out by running a non-perishable food and personal items drive. We are asking students and teachers to bring non-perishable food items and put them in a tub we have provided for each classroom. Items such as canned beans, pasta, long-life milk, spreads, cereals, canned fruits and vegetables.
We will run our Food Drive from June 2 to June 22 and we would appreciate any donations.
We thank you for helping us to support others in need.
Thank you for your help.

Sheep are Followers
(Matthew 9: 35 - 10: 9 - 23)
“We are his people, the sheep of his flock”. How picturesque - all those cute critters grazing obediently, and I know I’m supposed to want that, but in my heart I’m thinking, “No thanks”. Sheep are followers. I’m a terrible sheep. I don’t want to follow. I want to control. For example, I want to control my schedule so that I never have to wake up while it’s still dark. I want to turn on the radio as I’m getting ready and never hear a pledge drive. I want all the traffic lights in town to turn green as I drive up to them.
But the problem is deeper, and my own life reveals that especially as I ponder the big things I’d like to control. I want my family to give me my way in everything. I don’t want my friends to get sick, or at least to get well when I pray for them, especially the one I keep praying for who keeps getting sicker. I don’t want to worry about finances, kids, the environment. I want everyone to practice compassion instead of escalating conflict to violence.
Uh-oh. The real issue here, I see, isn’t that sheep are followers. The real issue is that sheep are not in control. Giving up control isn’t a goal we can work toward – it’s a statement about reality. We can’t give up control because we don’t have it in the first place! Yes, we must pray and work – clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick and imprisoned. But we must also acknowledge that we don’t control the outcome, and we can practice gratitude to the one who made us, whose kindness endures forever, who has placed us in this amazing flock and invited us to serve with joyful song.
Pray
Jesus, you call us to live our faith, travelling beside you, in a world filled with tension. As you bring peace to the world, you also disrupt our peace – turning our lives upside down. May we be reminded of your constant love for us. May we feel your disturbing presence in our lives as a reminder that we are heard, known, and loved as cherished children of God. Amen.
Ponder
Where is your life out of control – your children disrespectful, your health deteriorating, your job unsatisfying, someone in your circle sick or addicted or divorcing? Make a list, and then consider the thoughts and actions that are properly within your influence and those that are not. How would your actions today change if you embraced the beyond-your-control nature or even one of these situations?

Service Begins at Home
Perhaps you entertain grand dreams of how to live out your Christian vocation. Perhaps foreign missions where you can “gather the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” or cloisters in the desert, appeal to the romantic side of your nature. Why not give your life over to God’s service in a blaze of excellent fervour? On your way to holy perfection, however, it’s always a good idea to make a stop that’s more accessible and just as worthy: right where you are. Can you love and serve the people already given to you in your family, neighbourhood, school, and parish? Before you dash off to save the world, share a little of that love at home.
The Commissioning
Go out as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Make a difference to those you encounter.
We will speak of Christ and his mission.
We will live out and proclaim Christ’s way.
We will encourage the downhearted.
We will be found beside the sick.
We will meet hatred with compassion.
We will encounter self-serving with love.
We will not give in or give up.
You are God’s faithful people.
There is nothing to stand in your way.
Wellbeing

If you want to learn to ride a skateboard or get better at maths, you need to practise. It’s the same when you want to feel happier!
Here are some easy ideas to give Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy a try every day. Because the more you practise, the better you will feel.
Let's Practice!
